4 KNOWLEDGE, EVIDENCE, THINKING ERRORS
Human knowledge has its limitations. As we delve deeper into the process of Analytic Reasoning, it is important to examine many diverse aspects of thinking and knowing.
Our text provides us with many examples and explanations to illustrate the way humans acquire knowledge and think about it. it is important to read the topics about knowledge pages 99-108.
Choose ONE of the topics on page 108 (letters a-n) and do some online research of the subject. Share the info by writing a summary of the facts you find in an online article. Write between 75-100 words and don’t forget to cite the source, in case someone wants to read it too

Studies show that was that couples who cohabited before marriage were significantly more likely to split up than those who didn’t. Newer reports from National Center for Health Statistics showed studies that out of 13,000 men and women 71% who were engaged before moving in together made it to their 10th anniversary. Couples who did not co habitat before marriage dropped to 69%.
The high divorce rate in this country reflects a casual view of love and marriage based on selfish temporal emotions rather than selfless commitment.

Studies show that men are more aggressive by nature than are women. Men being more aggressive is due to the variations in one of the two genes which are called neurotransmitter serotonin or neuroendocrinology. Men proved their aggressiveness through their being adventurous. They are at the same time more aggressive sexually. Females are not necessarily less aggressive, but that they tend to show their agression in less overt, less pyhsical way. Men do, however, express their aggression with violence more than women. Females may display more verbal and relational aggression, such as social rejection.

I chose question number 2 on page 108. Our observations alone are not enough to completely make a decision, sometimes an outside influence can alter your own judgment. I have found that this statement is relevant in a lot of conflicting observations. Such as fights among friends or foes. One person might have seen his friend strike the other first or vise-avers. While another person may challenge the others observation by adding in his own view. This situation occurred a lot at high school. Depending on who hit who first is a big deal and can be the key component in depicting who will be guilty. While conflicting observations are a factor, relationships are also another factor. Confirmation bias is what comes to play when deciding who is at fault, and that is usually what picks out the lie from the truth.

Through scientific findings research has found that yawning is not only contagious among people, but through animals as well. As people read about it, hear it, see it happeneing, or think about it, it tends to have an impact on all people. It can come complete with stretchs, watery eyes, and a feeling of tiredness. It may affect everyone differently but it does affect everyone regardless. I found this to be true with myself and have observed people in my family to see if they are affecting when I yawn and stretch myself.

I chose the topic human life begins at conception. Abortion has been a controversial for many years because some say life begins at conception and others say possibly when the heart starts beating. This may be true since even in adulthood if the heart isnt beating you are considered dead. i asked a few others what they thought and most agreed that life begins when the baby can live outside the womb (viability) whuch is usually around 21 weeks. I personally think that life definitly begins at conception. As soon as sperm and egg meet a life is being built.

I chose capital punishment and if it deters crime. According to the research i was able to find that studies have shown that capital punishment saves lives. With the outcome of malicious and cruel crimes being capital punishment, individuals who would consider committing these crimes do not because of the outcomes. I believe this, I would not murder someone knowing that the chance of death row would be considered for the crime I committed. I was able to find information about capital punishment through a source from the Heritage Foundation. The average age of marriage has changed over the years. When I look back to my parents generation in the 1970s couples were getting married in their teens. My parents for instance got married at the age of 17. In my generation now at the age of 27 myself and many friends my age have not gotten married. Seems like there isnt such an importance now like there was then. Babies out of wedlock is more common now than it was then so couples feel like there isnt much of a rush. Society has accepted it now which it was not so accepting then.

I decided to try the Butter side down topic because i figured my scientific thinking would have supported my answer already. However i find that a whole new door was opened. My initial thoughts were that gravity and mass would take precedence’ in the reason for toast falling butter side down. However after researching the topic i see that there are more variables to consider. Does it actually always fall butter side down or are these just the instances our minds fallow as a pattern because we pay more attention to it when it does fall butter side down. Think about it if we have to clean up a mess it will stick in our brains longer, if we just pick it up and there is no mess there isn’t much else to think about.

I chose to research the topic Debbie was born under the sign Aquarius, therefore she must love water. ( I found this to be quite interesting because I am a Sagittarius, and my Disney Princess nickname since I was a little girl is Ariel. My parents used to have to literally drag me out of the water to get water and stay hydrated during the hot summer days growing up). I found through reading about the Aquarius, there symbol is the “water bearer,” which in symbolic nature represents the Gods giving nourishment to the earth with their life giving energies. Although Debbie is an Aquarius, she does not have to physically love water. However, after learning that those that are of the Aquarius zodiac are also humanitarians, this seems to symbolize her giving nourishment to the earth through her knowledge and heart.
The information that I found on the zodiac sign Aquarius is:

I chose letter n. and I decided that just because someone is born under Aquarius doesn’t mean they love water their though their symbol is the water bearer. In fact they their element is Air not water like Pisces. This is a common misconception that Aquarius people love water because the “aqua” people translate into water and fail to read the rest they are water bearer and water is not their element.

i have been married for 18 years and we did live together first. My marriage isn’t the greatest, but i don’t think that it makes a whole lot of didderence whether or not you lived together before hand, i think it depends on a persons beliefs and how committed they are.

I chose whether or not the death peanalty deters crime, according to my findings on the Washington Post website for every execution that takes place, that saves the lives of potentially 18 people. I get the numbers and all, but i don’t necessarily beleive in capitol punishment.

I decided to research is yawning contagious. The answer is yes. I guess you could say I used myself as a lab rat. I was looking through the topics and suddenly found myself yawning after reading those 3 little words “YAWN ING IS CONTAGIOUS”. So I started my research and started seeing pictures of people yawning, well then I started to yawn and have been ever since while writing this. Researchers have found that yawning is not only contagious in human but in chimpanzees as well. Brain studies were conducted and the resuls confirmed the obvious: yawn contagion is largely unconscious. It bypasses the known brain circuitry for consciously analyzing and mimicking other people’s actions.
Other researchers claim it has nothing to do with it. Some say it deactives one part of the brain while activing another part. There are so many theories as to yawning being contagious. I think researcher are still trying to discover why. And now maybe I can stop yawn now that I am done thinking about it!

I chose prayers are answered. I chose this because I truly think that they are. I feel personally connected to this issue, primarily as I have been doing more praying in the past 2 weeks admittedly than I ever had. A very dear friend of mine was critically injured in a tragic automobile accident, and for all particle beliefs this lady is truly lucky to be alive. I have done some research on prayers, but none really really apply to this directly. Most tell how to have your prayers answered, and then some related to specific instances where prayers are answered. Either way, giving the impression that prayers are answered. In my case, I truly believe that my friend is a true reflection of prayers answered. I believe in the power of prayer, and infact believe that prayer is more powerful than anyone might believe. I think that is is the power of prayer that my friend is still with us today, and is now recovering, slowly by none the less still recovering. Through the power of prayer of many, friends and family. Believe that your prayers will be answered and believe in what you are praying for. I believe that god goes answer all prayers. It may not be immediate, and it may not be in the way you expect, but he will answer.

I chose letter B: Are men angrier and more aggressive than women? According to an article that I found online the studie showed that men are not neccessarily more aggressive that it may be a matter of power. Women are more likely to have leadership skills but men are more likely to hold “managerial” positions. According to the article in 2004 a study by Florida State University showed that men and woman have the same amount of angry thoughts but have a tendency to deal with them differently. Woman are more likely to get even through gossip or through revenge where men usually take a more direct approach.

I decided to look into whether living together has any effect on divorce. My first marriage ended in divorce due to domestic violence. I believe that had I lived with my ex beforehand, i would not have married him. I cannot regret my decision. Because of this marriage, I had two beautiful children. I lived with my second husband for five years before our marriage. This marriage has also produced two remarkable children. As is everything in life, there are ups and downs. After almost 18 years, things are working for the most part. Getting to know someone first, I believe that you are much more able to handle things in a more understanding way. This is not to say that there is not a chance for divorce, but as we age, our maturity level goes up and with maturity comes understanding.

I chose the topic regarding how Canadians live longer then Americans. According to a study throughn Reuters, we are given a couple reasons why Canadians have a higher life expentancy by a few years then Americans do. The two main reasons are that Canadians have access to a universal healthcare plan and there are lower levels of poverty. They also point out that “healthcare expenditures also have been higher in the United States than in Canada since the 1970s”.

I picked living together prior to marriage. I believe statisics are manipulated and are never correct. I know many people who have lived together prior to marriage and it helped them decide if thats who they want to be with. I also lived with my husband for 12 years prior to marriage, we have been married for a year. We have our ups and downs but we have learned over the years how to work things out and communicate. However I know many who have married then moved in together and found that it can’t work. So I feel it really depends on the persons involved and every situation is different.

Being one of my favorite subjects I chose, h. A flying saucer crashed over Roswell, N.M., in 1947. This incident is believe to be a real UFO that crashed in July, 1947. The Airforce reported this the next day and hours later recanted and said it was a weather balloon. In 1995 the government came forward again and stated it was a “Top-secret” project named Project Mogul. They also stated that Dummies were the “bodies” seen at the crash sight. Some say the military never used dummies until 1953. I still believe this was a ET UFO and the government still seems they need to cover it up.
